Golden Opportunities
On April 19, 2008, I was a keynote speaker at a Retreat in Little Rock,
AR for individuals struggling with food issues. During my opening
presentation, I spoke about how difficult it is to change your eating
habits. Most people deep down want more than anything to look good, but
eat everything they want. Everyone is looking for that magic pill.
I am sorry to say for over twenty years I have been looking for that
magic pill and it does not exist. The secrets are to learn how to love
yourself and become grateful for the blessings you have in your life.
When you are being kind to yourself and acknowledging your blessings
something switches in your mind and your attitude changes. With this new
thinking you automatically start looking at food from a different
perspective.
It has been proven over and over again that a change in attitude gives
you the strength to put the fork down and eat healthy food and portions.
I also discussed some of the steps a person could take to start looking
at life from another perspective. Some of the steps you can take to
maintain a healthy weight:
-
Discover the real YOU and learn to
love yourself. Finding the real You and loving yourself gives you the
strength to put the food down and live life from another perspective.
This is the greatest gift you could give yourself.
-
If you go off your plan, tell
someone and return immediately to following your healthy eating plan.
Remember we are human beings and make mistakes. The beautiful part is
that we can change our behavior in an instant.
-
Create a Grateful List. Writing
down everyday what you are thankful for helps you realize that you are
important.
-
Hire a nutritionist to help create
a healthy meal plan. It makes life simpler to know in advance what you
are going to eat instead of constantly thinking about food.
-
Work with an exercise trainer.
Having an exercise program that is created by a professional is safe
and helps you look and feel good.
-
Find a support group. Feeling you
are not alone in your struggle with food helps you to realize that
most people are dealing with the same challenges. Discussing what is
going on in your life with others helps everyone find solutions that
work.
As usual I also learned a lot from
the participants at the Retreat. The biggest realization was that, no
matter who you are and where you live, we all have the same challenges.
The secrets are to be kind to yourself, eat healthy food and portions
and support each other in finding solutions.
Have a great month and enjoy your opportunities and gifts!
