 I
was invited to a Bank Opening Celebration and to my surprise the
author Mary Higgins Clark was the special guest speaker.
I walked into the bank and looked for the people I usually see
at networking events. No one was there. I put a smile on my
face, walked over to the first person I saw and introduced
myself. Within minutes a group of us were talking and waiting to
meet the famous Mary Higgins Clark.
Mary got up to speak, told us about her life and passion for
writing mystery novels. By sharing with us in such a comfortable
way the energy in the room was warm and friendly.
It struck me that when we speak in front of a group we can just
share who we are and discuss our passion. The room will
automatically light up.
When she finished speaking even though we were standing around
waiting for her to sign her recent book for us, we all started
talking to each other.
Everyone was relaxed and shared about the different books we
were reading. Eventually, the conversations turned to our
businesses and people started sharing about them in a more
relaxed way. We were building relationships instead of looking
for business.
The moral of the story is you can be yourself, relaxed and have
fun at networking events instead of going to them with an agenda
for finding clients.

Two years ago I founded the Princeton Canal Walking
Group. We walk along the Princeton Canal on Tuesday
evenings and Saturday mornings and between 10 to 20
people join the walk.
